Art is a language. Throughout history, from illuminated manuscripts of antiquity to modern political posters, artists have incorporated text into art and vice versa. The juxtaposition of word and image creates a cumulative effect that can convey a pointed political message, make a cultural or social statement, or simply mystify the eye. Words themselves can be works of art, whether used for their literal meaning, their symbolic value, or their visual properties when printed or written. Images have power, and so do words. Together…

The pieces in this exhibition represent the work of numerous artists both local and from across the country. The theme is text. The artwork explores the possibilities of the marriage of words and images using myriad media and materials: sculpture, photography, tapestry, collage, book art, video, fabric, and even ice. One piece is written in Braille and designed to be touched.

The guest juror for this exhibition, who selected the pieces, is Leisa Austin, owner of Imago Galleries, one of the West Coast’s premier art galleries.
