Please help out with our CAN drive!

A CAN of Food = A Small Unit of Caring Nourishment, a Package and a Transportable Gift to a hungry person.

We are surrounded by hunger and none of us know how to begin the process of relief. As part of the "Santa Monica - The Art of Summer" show we will building a CAN-Castle together as a community outreach project.

With your help and support our creative artists will work on playful creations that will then be turned over to our local Orange County food banks. The CAN-Castle is a simple idea that we hope will build into something that will inspire all of us to work together on solutions in supporting our hungry.

Please help with donations of cans or money to buy cans. All contributions over 100 cans or $100 will be listed on our Crussell Fine Arts and OCCCA websites and given non-profit tax deduction letters.

Latino Independent Films

Januray 2011. Times and Final Films TBD

January of 2011 we reach out to the community with a film festival from Mexico, Central America, South America, North America, the Iberian Peninsula and Chicanadas.

This offers a different perspective to look on the new popular culture in the USA. We are glad to present these independent films, which provide drama to the commercial film industry.

Selected films are from the experimental cinema of the independent Mexican industry from the classic to surrealistic to the avant-garde contrast with the “Golden Age” or classic films form early 1930’s.

These films were created by visual artists, photographers, activist or amateurs, and frequently ignored by the industry, because of the lack of advertising, promotion or big budget.

A look at the avant-garde rebellion that provides origins of the underground cinema.

Los Olvidados (the Young and the Dammed, 1950) Director Luis Bunuel.
This is a pioneering film about the street kids of Mexico City becoming early gangs members in their own environmental. Bunuel’s view is an early social problem that still is with us. From this idea came other early national films looking at social problems. Later came films with International reach like: Salam, Bombay!

Mira Nair, 1988, coproduction Franco- India and USA

“Kids” Larry Clark, 1995, USA.

“Amores Perros” Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, 2000 Mexico.

“City of God” Fernando Meirelles, 2002, Brazil.

Los Olvidados is a film that’ is ahead of time and is still very contemporary today it documents the horror of social problem more than fifty years ago and is still an inspiration and a reference for future films on this subject.

“Frida Natualeza Viva” 1984, Director Paul Leduc.
The life of Frida Kahlo, one of the most admired Mexican painter in the world. Actress Ofelia Medina Plays Frida Kahlo in very eloquent way and in a different manner than Salma Hayek. It provides a good picture the intellectual and artistic life of Mexico in the late 1940’

La Otra Conquista (the Other Conquest) director Salvador Carrasco 2007
Mexico 1521 – The Spanish army of Hernan Cortes has swept through the new world forcing their religious beliefs on the brave Aztec people. They would conquer their land but not their soul.

La Montana Sagrada (The Holy Mountain) Director Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1972.

El Callejon de los Milagros (The alley of the miracles) director Jorge Fons. Mexico

Canoa Director felipe Cazals, Mexico, 1975.
